Sunday’s Coming, July 26

Finding our way back to God

I am excited to preach from the Old Testament book of Haggai on Sunday.  Here’s why:

  • It’s short! (39 verses)
  • It’s concise (takes places in a period of four months).
  • It points to Jesus
  • And….

It reverses the lens.  Let me explain.  Most of the prophets we’ve looked at show our relationship with God from God’s perspective.  Haggai shows it from our perspective.  It’s as if he takes the camera and puts it on one man’s forehead so we can see it from his perspective.

That man is Zerubbabel.  Zerubbabel is tired, discouraged, frayed.  He’s been working on a project for 2 decades and gotten almost nowhere.  The wind must be out of his sails.  His soul has taken body blow after body blow.

And, that man is us.  Most of us can name a time (maybe even right now) when we’ve been tired, discouraged, frayed, even wondering about our place in the world.  Lean in with me to this little story.  Together we will find encouragement for our week and meaning for our lives.

With you for the King,

Jon

(Next week’s prophet: Zechariah)
