Sunday’s Coming

Some Thoughts from the Peak of Wedding Season
Before Sunday comes, two more of our kids are walking down the aisle and making their covenants of marriage.  This week it’s Hanna Barker in Orange City, and Sean Guthmiller in Sioux Falls.  Last week it was Josh Landhuis in Cherokee.  And before that, Alisha Netten in Orange City.

That’s a lot of champaign!

In addition, I’ve had the privilege of doing 16 premarital sessions for various couples.  And I’ve been blessed by re-reading some classic pieces on weddings.  Here is a short section from a wedding message that Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote from a Nazi prison cell to relative preparing for marriage:

Marriage is more than your love for each other. It has a higher dignity and power, for it is God’s holy ordinance, through which He wills to perpetuate the human race till the end of time. In your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are a link in the chain of the generations, which God causes to come and to pass away to His glory, and calls into His kingdom. In your love, you see only the heaven of your own happiness, but in marriage you are placed at a post of responsibility towards the world and mankind.

Be encouraged, young couples, and be courageous.  Something great is at play in the grand narrative of your covenantal journeys.

SUNDAY’S COMING!

WorkAndWorshipAnother Sunday, another story!  This week, Elder John Buntsma talks about worship and work at a major national employer.  It would easy to meander through work as a cog in a giant corporate machine.  But John shares how he follows Christ in the work place and sees the Kingdom breaking into the universe of cubicle planet.

The message picks up a second danger in work.  Last week, Ben hit on what happens when work becomes and idol.  This week, Jon takes us to the back end of Ecclesiastes 2, where we think about how meaningless toil leads to idleness.

And… baptism!  Logan Joy Van Marel will be brought before the church for baptism!

This week’s musical genre?  Campfire songs with a cacophony of guitars!

And…. after worship, 50+ students and sponsors head out to mission and Rocky Mountain High!
