Sunday’s Coming ~ July 31, 2016

All summer we’ve been digging into some messy stories in the Bible.  We are seeing again and again, in a variety of ways, how life gets messy.  But we also see how God’s grace in the person and work of Jesus brings us healing and wholeness for his glory and kingdom.

This week’s mess is just, well, it’s just weird.  This guy named Samson is chosen by God before he is born to be very special.  He even seems to have super powers because of his long hair.  If I didn’t know this was in the Bible, I would think it was some kind of new X-Men movie.

But it’s right there, in Judges 13-16.  God gives Samson incredible power and Samson proceeds to royally screw it up.  His mess brings pain for himself and for God’s people.  But, God shows up when Samson grows humble.

Samson’s story is really the story of Israel – God’s chosen people.  Over and over again they make a mess of their life and of their place in God’s plan for the nations.  They get humbled and cry out to God.  God, in mercy, acts with grace.

And, if you look even a little, you’ll see your own story, too.  There is nothing new under the sun.  Even more, if you look a little longer, you’ll see Jesus in this story.  Plan to join us and be amazed.
