This week we begin our summer series entitled MESSY GRACE. It is a recognition of the beautiful reality that God is at work in the midst of our messiness.
Over the past number of years I have had the joy of watching several chalk artists do their amazing work. They begin with a blank black canvas and cast broad strokes of chalk onto this canvas in no seeming order. Layers upon layers of chalk are added to this work until a beautiful picture begins to emerge and you are left amazed. But this is not all. The chalk artists’ then turn on a “black light” to reveal that beneath the surface is another scene of even greater beauty and wonder. It always takes my breath away.
Could this be what God is doing in our lives each and every day? Could he be taking the messiness of our lives and be doing a work that is truly beautiful and new?
During this series we are going to look at a number of people and stories where God was at work with his amazing grace in the midst of messy situations and messy people. We are going to see how the messes do not disqualify them for God’s grace but often times are the avenues God uses to reveal his most deep, beautiful, and life-giving grace and power.
This week we will be exploring Matthew 15:21-28 together. In it we will be confronted with a Canaanite mother that is in a big mess—her daughter is demon possessed and suffers terribly. You may be surprised or shocked by the interaction she has with Jesus and his disciples, but you will get a picture of grace that is made real in the midst of weakness. Come and join us in the mess and see what God can do!
