Through the centuries, followers of Jesus have made it their practice to gather on the first day of every week to celebrate the resurrection. That’s why most churches worship God on Sundays. Every Sunday is a mini-Easter.
But the specific celebration on Easter Sunday is the biggie! We take time to read again the story of Jesus rising from the dead. The human writers of the Bible tell us the resurrection story through the people who experienced it.
We walk with people like Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John, and the disciples. We see what they see: a grave stone rolled away, a tomb empty of a body, clothes neatly folded, two angels in white robes. We feel what they feel: bewilderment, not understanding where the body of Jesus is or why it was moved, not even considering that he could be risen from the dead. And twice in John’s account, Mary weeps.
And we weep, too, don’t we?
It’s easy for me to get lost in the bigness of the Easter story. We cry out, “Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!” And it is a big story. But when the Bible writers tell it, it’s very personal. Every person has their own encounter with Jesus. Yes, he conquered the grave and defeated death.
But it is not announced with fanfare. He stands behind Mary and asks, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
Maybe this week you will hear Jesus ask you the same questions. Why do you weep? Whom do you seek? My prayer is that you will hear Jesus, like he did to Mary, whisper your name in a way you will know that he is alive and he is here. And he will take every one of your tears and not let one of them touch the ground.
