Sunday’s Coming ~ December 20, 2015

We are in the fourth week of a season called “advent.” The word “advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming.” For the first Christians, advent was all about preparing for Jesus to come again – the true second Christmas.

Maybe because Christ’s birth was first celebrated during winter amid darkness, light is one of the key elements used to help us understand what Christ’s coming means. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  (John 1:4)

And this week the kids are telling the story of Jesus’ birth!  It is arguably the most anticipated Sunday of the year! I so hope you enjoy their innocence, their joyful singing, the words they will share, and the message they will bring.

Let’s celebrate both the message and the ones who bring it!  Let’s cheer them on as they tell us the old, old story with fresh eyes and young tongues.  And, when they are finished, let them know how happy you are with their effort.  Praise the Lord!

We will also hear a fourth message from John 1.  This weeks question is simple, “Have you beheld him?”  “Behold” sounds like an old word.  We don’t use it much these days.  But lean in for a little while and let’s see if the Holy Spirit will help us to behold again.

Oh, and don’t miss Christmas Eve!  Next Thursday evening, we’ve got two services — 4:00 and 5:30 p.m.
