Sunday’s Coming ~ September 27, 2015

A long time ago, a singer sang these words, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24).

What day was he talking about? This little line looked forward to the day that Jesus would become the cornerstone of God’s people’s lives, the day when people would understand that Jesus is their Savior.

So, in essence, that day could be this week.

For five weeks this fall, the Holy Spirit is taking us slowly through John 3 and John 4.  We’ll hear some of the most quoted words in the Bible – “You must be born again…” and “For God so loved the world…” and “…never be thirsty again.”

This week, we will come to the amazing climax of Jesus’ conversation with an unnamed woman outside a village by a watering hole.  He reveals his true identity and she finds hers.  Up to this moment, she is trapped by two identities: one makes her a slave to a past she cannot change; one is an idol she won’t let go of.

But… in Jesus, the identities that make us slaves to our past and the idols we cling to evaporate in his presence.  We are set free as daughters and sons of our heavenly Father.  The perfect love of Jesus swallows our fear and crushes our failures.

By the end of this week, my prayer is that we would be able to declare with the ancient singer, “This is the day the Lord has made!”

Also, one of our worship interns, Aaron Van Ee (NWC senior from Pella, Iowa), will be leading us.
