Laborer – Follower – Sent One

Yesterday’s message launched 5 weeks in Matthew 10, where Jesus trains the disciples for the mission they (and we) are called to.  They will see what Jesus sees, feel what he feels, and do what he did.

Jesus sees people.  Jesus feels compassion for them.  Jesus announced and demonstrated the Kingdom of God.  Jesus isn’t looking for experts (though he’ll take them); Jesus isn’t looking for the most gifted; Jesus takes laborers who will follow and who will be sent.  He doesn’t call the empowered; he empowers the called.

“The harvest is plentiful; the laborers are few.  Therefore pray earnestly for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

And, as you walk through the week, think about your answer to this question: “What would it look like to demonstrate the reign of God in the places I live, work, and play?”

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL CONNECTING POINT

Count to 10 with your kids. Ask them to name one rule that you follow in your house. Ask and see if they know why they have that rule. Help your kids see the importance of rules for keeping order. Ask what they remember about the story they heard in The Gospel Project for Kids about God giving the commandments.

God had redeemed His people from slavery in Egypt. People who have been redeemed demonstrate their love for the Redeemer thorough obedience. By giving the Ten Commandments, God showed His standard for holiness. But the people could not obey the commandments perfectly; God used the law to show that people needed a Savior. God provided that Savior ultimately through the person of Jesus Christ.
