Sunday’s Coming ~ Sept. 14, 2014

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN…
photo (4)Ann and I enjoyed the company of 20 people yesterday afternoon.  Most (not all) were north of 80 and good number were north of 90.  We enjoyed some devotions and prayers, especially for our church’s teenagers, and sweet fellowship with the Trinity members who live at Landsmeer.

But what struck me about the people gathered was both the day and a phrase.  It was September 11 – 13 years after the events in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.  Of course, we answered the question, “Where were you when you learned of the World Trade Center being hit by planes?”

Then, it dawned on me, anyone older than 80 has had three of those moments.  And so we talked about “Where were you when…. you heard about Pearl Harbor?  And… you heard about President Kennedy?”  Big moments stay with us in stunning detail.

This afternoon reminded me of God’s incredible faithfulness through difficult times in history.  We may be surprised by world-altering events.  God never is.  History is moving toward his end and his purposes, when Christ will come in all his glory and the kingdom will be fulfilled.

With you on the journey,

Pastor Jon

SUNDAY’S COMING

FIRM FOUNDATION

It’s week 3 with the disciples in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:17-46.  This week, to be true, the message will be tough before it ends with stunning joy.  Jesus brings us to the cinema of our soul and shows both the radical life his new community lives into, and our own sinful nature.  We live in the tension of his ideal community and our real life.  The standard and the stakes are high, but the Gospel — the Good News — is greater.

We also welcome our beloved brother and sister, Rev. Titus and Mary Baraka from Mukono, Uganda.  They’ll share in worship and teach us in Sunday School.

Our fall worship times continue with services at 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Children and Youth Sunday School will meet between services, 10:00-10:50 a.m.

Children and Worship Children ages 5 through 1st grade will be dismissed during the service and can be picked up after church in the Kid’s Area.

Our Adult Sunday School Opportunities this week are:

  • Questions of Life (Fellowship Hall)
    • Come out for an opportunity to explore important and challenging questions we have in life.  In this place participants will find encouragement  from one another to seek God and the community of faith to find answers.  This week Rev. Titus Baraka will be exploring the question, “Can we heal people? What is our role in healing”  Grab a coffee or drink and join in!
  • Sunday School Guide (Adult Room 1)
