Most of us aren’t very good at waiting. In our frenzied, fast-paced society, hurry and impatience are the norm. We rush from one thing to the next, trying to get it all in. Or we find ourselves preoccupied, worrying about the future and anxious about tomorrow. It’s hard to slow down, stop, and just be present to the gift of the moment.

But this is exactly what the Holy Spirit invites us to do in the season of Advent: slow down, take a deep breath, and pay attention to the deep longing of our hearts. To courageously face the darkness within us and around us, and to put our trust in the God who promises to be our light and salvation. Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, is an invitation to lean into this posture of waiting and anticipation. “Wait for the LORD,” the Psalmist declares. “Be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (Ps. 27:14)
